This needs to be completed before the course. If you have any questions during the online workshop, ask your evaluator during the course.

Who Should Take This Course?

You should take this course if you are a Level 1 Instructor with some teaching experience, love to teach, and have a desire to take your teaching skills to the next level. You should be confident and comfortable demonstrating intermediate to advanced riding in corresponding terrain.

Am I Ready?

The Level 2 Instructor standards require you to pass both riding and teaching evaluations. In order to help you achieve success on the course, we suggest you take the following steps in preparation, if they are available to you:

Spend time working as an instructor (CASI recommends at least 45 hours of teaching experience as a Level 1 instructor), honing your communication, analysis and group management skills.
Attend a session with a current CASI Level 2 Evaluator, to get feedback on your riding ability in relation to the technical standard.
Complete the Level 2 course preparation workshops.

You may also take the Level 2 course as a non-testing participant. Participate in the course and improve your teaching and riding skills without participating in the exams. Non-testing participants will not receive the Level 2 certification but at the completion of the course will receive a certificate of participation.

Pre-requisites:

Current CASI Level 1 Instructor
Must be fluent in either English or French
Able to ride on advanced terrain including un-groomed slopes, and carve controlled turns on intermediate terrain.

Description:

The CASI Level 2 Instructor certification is for any snowboarder that has passed the Level 1 certification, and has an interest in teaching more experienced snowboarders. CASI recommends that Level 2 candidates have prior experience teaching snowboarding in a snow school setting (approximately 45 hours) before attempting the Level 2 certification. This is not a mandatory requirement, and all Level 1 members are welcomed on the course, however, it is recommended in order to help ensure success on the Level 2 evaluations.

The goal of the Level 2 course is to develop a skills-based teaching approach for intermediate snowboarding, as well as an understanding of CASI technique and methodology, and the role of snowboard teaching within the industry. It combines practical snowboard teaching methods, technical understanding and development, as well as development of guest interaction and technical analysis skills.

Candidates will receive coaching on their riding and teaching skills, with the goal of reaching the Level 2 standard in both areas. They will also receive suggestions and strategies for long-term development. The successful candidate is certified to teach snowboarders up to the intermediate level (skills and terrain).

Level 2 is a prerequisite for the Level 3 certification.

When should I book my travel and accomodation?

CASI courses require minimum numbers to run and while most courses do run, some do not. It is therefore very important you do not make any travel arrangements, until the course is confirmed to be happening. Simply registering for a course is not a confirmation that the course will ultimately run.

How old do I have to be?

There is no age requirement however, you must be a current Level 1 Instructor.

What will the Level 2 get me?

To start with, you’ll get training that will allow you to teach intermediate riders. With this, you’ll get more opportunities to teach higher-end lessons, as well as a pay raise (depending on your resort’s policies).

What do I have to do to pass?

Level 2 instructors needs to have solid intermediate riding skills. You should be comfortable riding at moderate speeds on most blue terrain, including blue and black runs. You’ll need to demonstrate that you can carve the snowboard (leaving a “pencil line” in the snow), as well as make short-radius turns on black runs. Teaching wise, you should be comfortable talking in front of a group of experienced riders, and demonstrating intermediate and advanced-level manoeuvres.

Should I have teaching experience?

Teaching experience helps. If you’ve been teaching beginner lessons for a season or so, you should be fine. CASI recommends that you have experience teaching (approx. 45 hours), in order to help you be successful in the Level 2. This is just a recommendation – all Level 1 members are welcome to take the Level 2 certification.

I only passed part fo the course, what do I do now?

If you’ve failed either the riding or teaching components of the Level 2 course, you have 2 years from the date of the course to retake the portion failed. The Level 2 re-test is a two-day re-evaluation (if required). If it is the riding component, you’ll attend Day 1 & 2, and if it is teaching component, Day 3 & 4.

7 Day Translated Courses

The Level 2 Translated Courses requires an extra 3 days to allow us to keep the same standards and quality of instruction. As all verbal communication will be translated, these 3 extra days allow time for the evaluators to give all students the same attention they would receive on a 4 day english course.

Who is the translator?

We ensure we use a certified CASI instructor to provide translation. This way, you can be confidfent they are familiar with the CASI method of teaching and that you will receive accurate translation.

CASI Refund Policy:

Refunds and transfers must be requested in writing via email. Please include your full name, member number, and course date(s) and location(s). Please allow 2 business days for your request to be processed.

For course transfers AND cancellations, the following penalties will be applied:

More than 4 weeks (>28 days) from the start of the program: Cancelation / Transfer fee: No fee
Within 4 weeks (28 days) of the start of the program: Cancelation / Transfer fee: 30% of course fee
Within 3 week (21 days) of the start of the program: Cancelation / Transfer fee: 70% of course fee
Within 2 weeks of the start of the program (or no-show on day of course): Cancelation fee: 100% of course fee (no refund) and no transfers are permitted within this time
The 2 week deadline is due to CASI not allowing new registration 2 weeks before the course

Notes on Refunds AND Transfers:

Transfers are possible only towards the same program, within the same season. If no transfer is possible, the refund policy will automatically apply.
Refunds and transfers requested for medical reasons will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and must be supported by acceptable supporting medical documentation.
JOI reserves the right to cancel any program without prior notice, and will not be responsible for any expenses incurred by the participant. In that event, registration fees will be refunded in full. CASI-ACMS are also not responsible for any expenses incurred.
CASI membership dues are non-refundable for any reason
Refunds will be less the transaction fee, roughly 4%

CASI Member Fees:

CASI member fees must be up to date if you are an existing member.
For any course above Level 1, including re-tests, we can not process your registration if your member fess are not up to date.
You WILL NOT be elible for a refund if you register for a course and have not paid your member fees.
If member fees are not paid and you show up to the course, you will not be able to join.

CASI Instructor Level 2 Information

The CASI Level 1 Snowboard Instructor certification course is open to strong intermediate snowboarders, aged 14 years and older. Candidates on the Level 1 Course will spend time exploring snowboarding technique and teaching methods across a variety of venues, both on-snow (up to and including intermediate terrain) and during indoor presentations.

The CASI Level 1 course is an introductory course, designed to give successful candidates the skills necessary to begin their role as a new instructor in the industry. Beginner teaching methods, understanding of basic snowboard technique, as well as lesson planning and effective communication skills will be addressed.
